So long Popcode, Hello Zappar!

You might have noticed it has been very quiet around here lately, but behind the scenes a lot has been happening.

The big news is that the team behind Popcode have moved on to a new mobile AR venture, Zappar, which you can find out about at http://www.zappar.com. At Zappar we have an in-house team of artists and developers, which allows us to offer a full end-to-end AR solution to clients encompassing both the creative and technical aspects of AR experiences.

We're very excited to be pushing the boundaries of AR with Zappar. We've done some nice creative executions for clients already and we have a number of very exciting projects in the pipeline. Try downloading the Zappar app (available on iOS and Android) and have a look at some of our demos available on http://www.zappar.com - meet Big Bunny and tell the time with Bluebird's Clock, and check out the other things we've been up to!

So where does that leave Popcode? As Zappar has a full-solution model it doesn't offer a developer kit for third-parties to develop content. We're keeping the Popcode app and developer kit available to let hobbyists continue to play with creating AR content. However please note there will be no further updates to Popcode and it may be taken down at some point in the future. There will never be a way to distribute anything you create with Popcode, and no support will be provided.

Thanks for your support and interest so far, and we hope you'll continue to enjoy the AR experiences offered by Zappar. If you'd like to discuss any commercial AR projects, then please get with us using the contact form on the Zappar website.

Popcode at the University of Cambridge Science Festival

We've been working with the team organising the Science Festival at the University of Cambridge to bring the front cover of their programme to life using Popcode.

Take a look at the University's news coverage here, check out their video from YouTube below, or visit the Science Festival Popcode page to view it with Popcode on your phone.

Popcode comes to iOS with Popcode 0.8.5!

We've just made available version 0.8.5 of Popcode. The big news is that Popcode is now available on Apple iOS 4 devices! It will work on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod touch (4th generation).

We haven't forgotten Android users either - the 0.85 update adds new platform features and addresses some stability issues. The full list of changes in the new version can be found in the Developer Documentation.

All of our demo content has been bundled up into a convenient "Popcode Demo Book" PDF, which you can download here.

So: Get Popcode, Download the Demo Book, and have fun!

Update - Popcode 0.8.1

We've just released a small, incremental update to Popcode.

Version 0.8.1 brings:

  • support for a larger number of devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S;
  • support for "Move to SD card"; and
  • a number of bug fixes.

A detailed list of changes is available in the documentation.

We expect it will work on the Samsung Vibrant too. If you have one of these devices and find that Popcode works (or doesn't!) please tell us on the forum.

Announcing Popcode 0.8

We're very happy to announce the launch of the first preview version of Popcode (version 0.8).

Popcode is a new Markerless Augmented Reality (AR) platform which allows objects in the real world to be brought to life with interactive 3D content.

Popcode features a unique method of AR content distribution. A Popcode combines the Popcode logo with a unique identifier. This serves two purposes: it alerts users to the fact that additional content is available, and also provides a very quick and easy way for the users to access that content. Only one mobile app is required to view any content hosted on the Popcode platform so the whole experience of downloading and viewing content is quick and easy.

Developers can create content for the Popcode platform for free using a simple XML-based language. There is support for 3D objects, audio, and interactivity to provide really compelling experiences. Scripting is also supported in a scene to produce more complex behaviours.

See the What is Popcode? page for more details.
